DWI (diffusion MRI) makes whole-body magnetic resonance imaging one of the most effective methods for early detection of cancer. Diffusion MRI measures the movement of water in tissues, and it is this sensitivity that makes it a superior way to detect cancerous tumors and other abnormal changes at an early stage – often before they are visible in other MRI examination methods.
Internationally, DWI is the “gold standard” of body radiology, but in Finland it is still used surprisingly little. What does DWI (diffusion) mean?
DWI sequences, or diffusion weighted imaging, measure the movement of water molecules in tissues.
When a pathological change occurs in a tissue – for example, a tumor, inflammation, or cellular compaction – the movement of water changes, and this is clearly visible in the images.
This is why using diffusion MRI sequences is so important in the early detection of cancer: it can reveal changes that other MRI imaging methods do not yet show.
