Shoulder pain and shoulder MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder – the most accurate imaging method for shoulder conditions
Shoulder MRI is the best method of investigation to determine the cause of shoulder pain or dysfunction accurately and safely. An MRI scan is the clearest and best way to see all the structures in the shoulder area: muscles, tendons, joint capsule, cartilage and bones.
Many shoulder problems are caused by tendon or cartilage damage that does not show up on X-rays or even ultrasound. An MRI scan provides a comprehensive view of the entire shoulder area and helps the treating physician make an accurate diagnosis and plan the best treatment.
Who can benefit from shoulder MRI?
Shoulder MRI is recommended if you have symptoms such as:
- Long-term shoulder pain
- Sore or clicking shoulder with movement
- Lack of strength or limited range of motion when lifting the arm
- Suspected shoulder strain, such as a rotator cuff tear
- Shoulder after an accident or sports injury
- Suspected shoulder osteoarthritis or cartilage damage
The examination is completely safe, painless and uses no radiation. During the scan, you lie on your back on the examination table and your shoulder is scanned quickly and comprehensively.
What does an MRI of the shoulder look for?
An MRI scan of the shoulder shows a clear view:
- Tendons of the rotator cuff and possible tears
- Bursae and their inflammation
- Cartilaginous surfaces of the shoulder joint and osteoarthritic changes
- Labrum (edge of the joint socket) and its tears
- Shoulder joint capsule and possible other soft tissue changes
- Shoulder bone and scapula structures
High-quality images help to understand the cause of the shoulder problem, making it easier to choose the right course of treatment.
Need a referral for a shoulder MRI?
You can come for an MRI of your shoulder with or without a doctor’s referral. If you have a referral, a statement about the images will be given to the referring doctor. If you come without a referral, you can order the examination yourself and our radiologist will prepare a report on the images, which you will receive electronically for your own use.
