MRI of the jaw joints – a precise examination for diagnosing jaw joint disorders

MRI of the jaw joints is a precise, radiation-free examination that provides detailed information about the structure and function of the jaw joints (TMJ). Magnetic resonance imaging clearly shows any changes in the joint capsule, articular disc, cartilage surfaces, tendons, and muscles.

The examination is ideal for investigating jaw joint pain, clicking, locking, and difficulty opening the mouth – without X-rays.

MRI scan times

Thanks to the Deep Resolve AI technology developed by Siemens, imaging times are significantly shorter and images are more accurate than before.

The examination takes approximately 20–30 minutes.

When is MRI of the jaw joints necessary?

Jaw joint problems are common and can cause pain, clicking, headaches, and problems with biting, among other things. Magnetic resonance imaging reveals possible structural changes, misalignments of the joint disc, and inflammatory changes that cannot be assessed as accurately with other imaging methods.

Typical reasons for MRI of the jaw joints:

  • Pain, clicking, or crunching in the jaw joint
  • Restricted opening or closing of the mouth
  • Suspected malposition or rupture of the articular disc
  • Jaw joint locking
  • Chewing muscle pain and stiffness
  • Headache or pain radiating to the ear, the cause of which is unclear
  • Suspicion of osteoarthritis or inflammation in the jaw joint

MRI of the jaw joints is a particularly useful examination when symptoms have persisted for a long time or when a diagnosis needs to be confirmed before treatment or orthodontic treatment.

How to prepare for magnetic resonance imaging of the jaw joints

The examination does not require any special preparation. You can eat and drink normally before the examination. Jewelry and metal objects must be removed from the head and neck area during the examination.

If you have dental implants or metal crowns, please inform us in advance – in most cases, they will not prevent the examination, but they may affect the image quality.

How is magnetic resonance imaging of the jaw joints performed?

The examination is performed in a lying position. During the scan, you may be asked to keep your mouth open or closed at different stages so that the movement of the jaw joint can be accurately assessed. The device makes a tapping sound during the scan – you will be given earplugs or headphones to use.

The examination takes about 20–30 minutes.

Results and follow-up

The images are analyzed by a radiologist who specializes in magnetic resonance imaging. If needed, the results are sent directly to your dentist, oral surgeon, or physical therapist.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the jaw joints helps to identify the exact cause of pain, clicking, or locking and guides you toward the right treatment.
