Knee MRI – an accurate diagnosis for knee pain
Knee MRI is the most accurate, painless and radiation-free method of examination to obtain precise information about the internal structures of the knee. It can be used to determine the cause of sudden accidents as well as long-term pain and strain injuries.
Why should you have a knee scan with a magnet?
The knee is a complex joint with numerous tendons, ligaments and cartilage surfaces. Many knee problems do not show up on X-rays or are not felt on clinical examination alone. An MRI scan can detect:
- Internal tears and damage
- Inflammatory conditions or fluid retention
- Problems with cartilage, tendons or ligaments
An MRI scan gives an accurate picture of the tissues – even before the condition worsens.
When is knee MRI recommended?
Typical reasons for coming to a photo shoot:
- Prolonged or recurrent knee pain
- Crepitation or locking in the knee
- Swelling or unclear fluid retention
- Accident or twisting injury in sport or everyday life
- Suspected ligament damage or tear of a ligament
- Assessment before or after surgery
Magnetic resonance imaging is also useful when the cause of the pain has not been determined by other examinations.
The most common findings on MRI of the knee
MRI of the knee often reveals:
- Torn meniscus (inner or outer meniscus)
- Anterior cruciate ligament injury
- Cartilage damage and early osteoarthritis
- Baker’s cyst (fluid accumulation behind the knee)
- Fractures
- Synovitis or arthritis
- Collateral ligament injuries
The findings can help plan rehabilitation or, if necessary, refer for further treatment (e.g. to an orthopedist).
Duration and course of the examination
An MRI of the knee takes about 10 minutes. The examination is painless and does not use radiation. This makes it suitable for young and active people.
In the examination:
- The patient lies on their back and the knee is supported in place
- You must remain still during the scan
- The scan does not require any preparation
- If you wish, you can listen to soothing music
With or without a referral – you decide
Visio Magnetic Resonance Imaging allows you to undergo the following examinations:
- Without a doctor’s referral – easily book an appointment yourself online
- With a referral – if you already have a doctor’s recommendation or referral, mention it when booking
The report on the examination is always provided by a radiology specialist. The report is included in the price of the examination.
