Back pain and MRI of the lower back

Lumbar MRI – the most accurate and safe test for the causes of lower back pain

Lumbar MRI is a painless and safe examination that provides accurate information about the structures of the lower back and spine. MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio frequencies to accurately image the internal structures of the back without harmful radiation.

Lumbar MRI helps identify the underlying causes of back pain and guides treatment in the right direction. The scan can detect conditions such as disc bulges, nerve root compression, abrasions, vertebral dislocations and spinal stenosis.

When should you have a lumbar MRI?

Low back pain is a common complaint that can have a number of different causes. Lumbar MRI is particularly recommended in cases of prolonged, severe or radiating lower back pain. It is also useful when a herniated disc or other structural changes in the spine are suspected, which can cause nerve tension.

Typical reasons for lumbar MRI include:

  • Prolonged or recurrent lower back pain
  • Radiating pain in the buttock, thigh or shin
  • Sensation of numbness or tingling in the lower limbs or buttocks
  • Suspected disc bulge or herniation
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Need for a spinal examination after an accident or injury

How to prepare for a lumbar MRI scan

An MRI of the lumbar spine does not require any special preparation. You can eat and drink normally before the examination. However, you should remove all metal objects such as jewellery, watches and belts when you come for the examination.

If you have a pacemaker, cochlear implant or other implanted metal object, please let us know in advance to ensure the safety of the examination.

How is a lumbar MRI scan done?

The examination is performed in the supine position using modern MRI equipment. The lower back is imaged from several directions to reveal the state of the intervertebral discs and nerve structures as accurately as possible. During the scan, the machine makes a tapping sound – you will be fitted with earplugs or headphones.

The lumbar MRI takes about 10-15 minutes. It is important to remain still throughout the scan to ensure a successful result.

MRI results and follow-up treatment

After the imaging, the radiologist analyses the images and prepares a written report. You will usually receive the results within a few working days. If you wish, we can also send the report directly to your doctor.

MRI helps doctors to find the right cause of your lower back pain and choose the most effective treatment to relieve your symptoms.
