MRI of the pelvis and hips helps to get an accurate diagnosis
Pelvic and hip MRI is a safe, non-radiological examination that provides detailed information about the condition of the hips, hip joint, pelvic bones, muscles, tendons and nerve structures. It helps identify the underlying causes of pain and mobility problems so that treatment can be targeted to the right problem in a timely and accurate manner.
MRI is based on a strong magnetic field and radio frequencies and does not use any ionising radiation. It is therefore a safe choice even for repeated examinations.
When is an MRI of the pelvis and hips necessary?
Pain in the pelvic or hip area can be caused by a variety of things: wear and tear on the joint, inflammation, tension, irritation of the mucous membranes or nerve tension, for example. Pelvic MRI can accurately identify problems in both the soft tissues and the skeletal structures.
Typical reasons for pelvic and hip MRI:
- Prolonged or recurrent hip pain
- Movement restrictions or hip stiffness
- Suspicion of inflammation of the mucous membrane (bursitis)
- Nerve swelling or radiation symptoms in the pelvic region
- Need for investigation after an accident or injury
- Unclear pain in the pelvic region or groin
- Assessment of wear or inflammation of the hip joint
Pelvic MRI is also useful for diagnosing sports injuries such as strain injuries, stress fractures or muscle tears.
How to prepare for an MRI scan of your pelvis and hips
MRI of the pelvis and hips does not require any special preparation. You can eat and drink normally before the examination. Metal objects such as jewellery, watches and belts should be removed on arrival.
If you have a pacemaker, hip replacement or other metal implant, please let us know in advance – we will always ensure the safety of the examination on a case-by-case basis.
How is an MRI of the pelvis and hips done?
The examination is performed in the supine position on an MRI machine. During the scan, the target area is imaged from several different angles in order to examine the condition of the joint, bones and soft tissues accurately.
The machine makes a tapping sound during the examination – you will be fitted with earplugs or headphones if necessary. The examination usually takes between 20 and 25 minutes. It is therefore important to remain still throughout the examination to ensure that the images are accurate.
Results and follow-up
The radiologist carefully analyses the images and prepares an opinion. You will usually receive the report and the images within a few working days. We can also send the results directly to your doctor.
Pelvic and hip MRI provides accurate information to help your doctor make the right diagnosis and choose the best course of treatment.
